The next Xylem International Meeting (XIM4) will be organized for the first time outside French borders, and it will be hosted in the beautiful venue of the world’s oldest Botanical Garden at the University of Padua (http://www.ortobotanicopd.it/en) on 25-27 September 2019.

XIM4 – A FORUM TO DISCUSS ON THE ADVANCES ON THE SOIL-PLANT-ATMOSPHERE CONTINUUM

The soil-plant-atmosphere continuum (SPAC) represents a hydraulic system in which water moves along a gradient of chemical potential from soil into roots, from roots to leaves along the xylem vascular network of roots, stem, branches and leaf venation, then through the leaf mesophyll until it evaporates and diffuses to the free atmosphere through stomata. All SPAC components present different structural, anatomical and biochemical characteristics (e.g., different cell types and proportions, cell and pit sizes, biomolecular regulation of different processes affecting water transport, etc.). Their integration contributes to the overall efficiency of the water transport system, but also determines its susceptibility to dysfunctions caused by the environmental variability.

The AIM of XIM4 is to stimulate open discussions on the cutting edge topics related to plant anatomy/hydraulics to advance our understanding on the integration of the different hydraulic compartments in order to implement more detailed and realistic information into vegetation and climate models.
